Calvary Episcopal Church was founded in 1859 under the authority of the Rt. Reverend Alexander Gregg, first Bishop of Texas, and enjoys a rich history in the Fort Bend County area. The original church building was constructed within one block of what is now the Fort Bend County Courthouse. Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas, signed the deed as a trustee of this church. The building was destroyed by a hurricane in 1875, but was reconstructed in 1878.

In 1954 the reconstructed church building was moved to the present location and the parish hall was added. Two years later, a campaign was begun to build a new building; and in 1959 it was dedicated. The quaint little church house previously used by the members of Calvary was moved to the grounds of the Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital but was destroyed by a tornado in 1974.

Calvary Episcopal School opened as a kindergarten in 1956 and has contributed a growing presence in Richmond since that time. Many lives have been significantly strengthened by the superior academic climate and strong Christian environment that the school dedicates itself to providing.

The buildings and facilities were updated in the mid 1990’s to include the renovation of the Education Building and the addition of the Family Life Center. These expansions have added tremendously to the quality of our worship, play, and growth, offering Calvary Episcopal School Students as well as church parishioners the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful spaces that we call our church home.

The members of Calvary Episcopal enjoy an historic presence while always looking to grow in the knowledge of Christ and in making him known to others. We are a place for opportunities- opportunities to make a difference in our Christian community. Our members participate in supporting various mission projects including Honduras, Rosebud Indian Reservation, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts, Community of Hope, and Helping Hands to name but a few. Our worship invites those who love traditional music with choir and anthem as well as those who enjoy a more contemporary style with drums and guitar. We encourage all ages to grow through Christian Formation and the sharing of our lives together. We believe that while we all have differing styles and preferences, we are one body of strength and unity as we meet and greet each other in the common bond of our Lord Jesus Christ.
